The first step is to keep busy. Know where you stand, know how much money you have and how long it'll support you. Look at this as an opportunity to catch up on yard work. Trim the hedges. Mow the grass. Do all kinds of accounting work. Vacuum the living room. It's important to fill that space between phone calls and job interviews with something. It's far too easy to give into the temptation to open a bottle of self-pity and get rip-roaring drunk off it. So, there's no shame in treating the running of errands like a 9-5 job. It keeps your mind off things which you really have no control over, and that's a good thing.
